World’s Largest Heat Shield Successfully Attached to the Orion Spacecraft

The world’s largest heat shield, measuring 16.5 feet in diameter, has been successfully attached to the Orion spacecraft. The heat shield installation marks one of the final steps in the spacecraft's assembly leading up to its first test flight, Exploration Flight Test-1 (EFT-1), later this year. The heat shield is made from a single seamless piece of Avcoat™ ablator. It will be tested on Orion’s first flight as it protects the spacecraft from temperatures reaching 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and an ocean splashdown following Orion's 20,000 mph reentry from space.
